Purpose: To integrate all forms of music into the St George’s United Church community, deepening its spiritual connection through music; to empower the community’s musical gifts and talents to support the life, vision, and mission of the church.
Hours and Conditions:
Part-time, minimum 12 hours per week September to June, 10 hours per week July and August.
Monthly Salary ($24-$30 per hour, depending on training & experience)
Generous vacation time
Funerals, weddings, and special services paid separately (5 hours per service).
Use of church facilities and instruments to enhance musical skills of congregants and local community when space available.
Normal Weekly Schedule: Sunday worship services, weeknight rehearsal, special worship services (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, Good Friday etc.).
Qualifications and Skills:
Experience in planning and presentation of contemporary sacred and/or secular music in the life of an active and vibrant Christian community or secular music venue.
Training from a recognized institute of learning or equivalent.
Has a capable voice and experience in singing, training, and preparing others for musical performances.
Knowledgeable and comfortable with a variety of traditional and contemporary styles that reflect a multi-generational sensibility.
Connection with wider music community to include local performers in worship as appropriate.
Comfort with the theology and ethos of the United Church of Canada as expressed by St George’s United Church’s vision and mission statement and is familiar with liturgical tradition.
Familiar with various hymn books and resources in use in the United Church of Canada.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Skill in oversight and leadership of paid and volunteer music program participants.
Key duties and Responsibilities:
Supervises the music program and staff/volunteers and provides leadership, training, and guidance.
In consultation with the minister, accompanist, and worship committee, participates in worship service planning and selecting and preparing music from a wide variety of genres.
Directs the choir, leads practices, supports musical growth, and conducts worship services and performances.
Regularly interacts with the congregation for feedback on the music ministry.
Supports the recruitment and of choir members, musicians and creates opportunity for the sharing of musical gifts of the congregation, especially in encouraging the children and youth in music activities e.g., children’s time, special children/youth musical pieces.
Arranges accompanists and extra musicians as required.
Oversees the music budget, music library and database, and maintenance and tuning of the musical instruments.
Participates in special services throughout the year including Ash Wednesday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as well as funerals/memorials.
Responsible in collaboration with the Coordinating Minister (or designate) and Accompanist for one self-funding community outreach project in the year, e.g., Christmas Sing-along.
Responsibility and Accountability:
Responsible and accountable to the governing body of the congregation through the Ministry & Personnel Committee (M&P) and is under the supervision of and reports to the Coordinating Minister.
The Music Director is responsible for managing their own hours and coverage for absences.
